Understanding Different Types of File Formats

March 14, 2022 by Grant Leave a Comment

You find yourself in a conundrum. Your boss has asked you to send them a PNG of the company logo, but you have no idea what that means. Is it some type of secret computer language that you know nothing about?

The truth is, yes. When most people talk about file formats, they use these types of abbreviations for them. If your career involves computers or technology of any kind, you’ll have to learn what they are.

Getting the hang of the different files isn’t as difficult as you may think. We can walk you through them. Check out this guide to become a master of the computer world.

PDF

First up on the list are PDF files. They’re popular with business professionals because it’s easy to share them, and employees can sign them with the click of a mouse.

You can email them, read pdf c#, and print them out. No matter what device you look at a PDF on, the formatting will stay the same. When a company asks you to upload your resume, most of the time they’re asking for a PDF copy.

You will need a PDF reader to be able to open the files, but a lot of computers have a program that you can use preinstalled.

JPEG

JPEG is the most common image file that you’ll come across. You can compress them as much as you want to make them small enough for your website or social media page.

For the first few compressions, the quality won’t drop down too much. The colors will remain nice and crisp, and you’ll still be able to make out all the fine details. The more you compress the file, however, the worse the quality will get.

PNG

PNG is another one of the common image file types. No matter how many times you compress or save a PNG, it’s not going to change much as far as quality goes.

The transparent background makes it easy to work with the images in photo manipulation software such as photoshop. We will warn you that it has a lower resolution than most of the other image files available to you.

That makes it a good option for websites within reason. They’re a bit heavier than JPEGs, so they can slow a site down if you use too many.

MP4

MP4s are a popular type of video file because pretty much every type of device can open them. Companies use them to send, receive, and upload videos to their websites and social media pages.

The file will be able to translate all the visual and audio information clearly, but at a lower resolution than the other video file types you can use.

Common File Formats

If you’re in a career field that has you working with computers to any degree, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the different file formats that exist.

It will be difficult for you to be successful if you don’t know basic computer lingo. We hope that reading this article has gotten you up to speed. For more tips that will help you work your way around a computer file, visit the Technology section of our blog.
