The Key Steps to Starting a Nursing Career

February 1, 2023 by Grant Leave a Comment

Nursing is certainly a challenging role, but it can also be one of the most rewarding careers out there for the right person. You will need to be able to work under pressure and have a compassionate nature if you want to succeed in this role, as caring for others is the key part of the job. If you have always wanted to work in a job that allows you to meet a variety of people every day and presents the opportunity to give back to your local community, this is certainly a path worth considering. Below are some key steps you will need to take if you do want to launch your career as a nurse.

Get Your Nursing Degree

If you want to be a nurse, you will need to get a nursing degree before you can register. These programs can take three to four years, depending on the one you enroll in. You do need to be prepared to commit to your studies if you want to embark on a nursing career, so give this some careful consideration before you start applying to schools. If you are already a registered nurse but want to enhance your abilities and boost your chances of progressing in your career, online programs can help you develop your nursing skills for more senior roles.

Get Some Work Experience

You will have placements when you are studying for your degree so that you can learn the hands-on skills required for this job. Before you start your nursing degree, however, it could be a good idea to try and gain some other work experience in a healthcare clinic or similar establishment. This will help you get a better idea of what to expect working in these kinds of environments, even if you’re not directly in a nursing role. It will also be a good opportunity to speak to the nurses you are working alongside to get their advice about this career. Volunteering at a local clinic or other organization that focuses on healthcare could be a good place to start.

Find a Mentor

When you are studying for your nursing degree, you might want to look out for opportunities to find a mentor, too. Working alongside someone who can give you feedback on your performance as well as share further tips could help you feel more confident and learn more about the role. The clinics or hospitals you are placed at might have these schemes in place, or speak to your college to see if they can signpost you to a mentorship that will suit you.

Prepare for Licensure Exams

Once you have graduated with your nursing degree, the next step will be to take the licensure exam in your state. When you have passed these tests, you will then be a fully registered nurse and able to practice. It is crucial to keep in mind that if you want to practice as a nurse in a different state, you may need to take another exam there before you can work.

If you have been thinking about starting a nursing career, these are some of the key steps you will need to take to get started.
