10 Tips For Biking Across The Golden Gate Bridge

February 13, 2020 by Grant Leave a Comment

The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic photo opportunity in San Francisco. It’s also a great excuse to get some exercise on your favorite bike. Follow these 10 tips for an unforgettable ride across the bridge with the best women’s and mens hybrid bikes.

Get To Know the Area

It would be a shame to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge only to pack up and go home. Check out other iconic rides, tasty restaurants and incomparable shopping experiences around the Bay Area.

Don’t Text and Ride

There will be many beautiful photo opportunities as you ride across the bridge. Don’t be tempted to pull out your smartphone for a selfie or sunrise shot as you cross. Pull off safely to the side to take your amazing photos and then put your phone away to keep on riding.

Be Cautious of Commuting Cyclists

Even with the best city bike for sale, you may not keep up with commuter traffic. Cyclists can travel rapidly across the Golden Gate Bridge to get to work or home. Don’t worry about keeping up with traffic, but be cautious as bikes pass you. Ride in a straight line and give plenty of room for passing cyclists.

Pull Over When Stopping

A sudden stop in the middle of the bike lane is a recipe for a collision. Even if you don’t see any cyclists behind you, it’s a good idea to pull off to the side and stop slowly.

Follow the Bike Lane Rules

Always ride on the right side and stay in a single file line as you cross the bridge. The lane can become crowded during rush hour, so be considerate of other riders as you make the amazing crossing.

Remember Your Helmet

Bikes, bridges and cars all together require safety considerations. A helmet is the minimum safety gear you need while you ride across the bridge. A comfortable helmet can be a lifesaver in the unfortunate event of a collision with a cyclist or other incident.

Plan an Early Ride

An early morning ride is a great idea for avoiding much of the traffic of the bridge. While the Golden Gate Bridge sees traffic all day, an early ride may be the closest thing to a quiet, solo ride you’ll find.

Prepare for Wind

Many riders forget to plan for high winds. Traveling across any bridge, but particularly a bridge as long as the Golden Gate Bridge, comes with a high chance of wind. Suit up comfortably to enjoy your ride.

Plan for a 2.1 Mile Ride

It takes most riders about 10 to 25 minutes to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge. Be sure you can comfortable ride at least two miles before you take a trip across the bridge.

Choose a Comfortable Bike

A comfortable ride requires a comfortable bike.
